Prayer Shawl Ministers provide physical, spiritual and emotional comfort to community members during times of crisis, illness and bereavement. Our prayers accompany tangible symbols of comfort including prayer shawls, lap robes and chemotherapy caps. We meet monthly 9:30 am – 11:00 am on the 2nd Friday of each month. We knit, crochet, quilt or sew handmade items at home at our own pace. There are no age requirements, just an ability to knit, crochet, quilt or sew simple patterns or the willingness to learn in a friendly environment.
Prayer Shawl Ministry Mission Statement:
The mission of the Prayer Shawl Ministry is to celebrate life and bring solace and comfort to those persons facing illness, loss or other catastrophic life changes. We do this through prayer and the tangible gift of a prayer shawl and other handmade items to comfort, enfold and recall the all-encompassing love of God. Other items such as baby blankets & hats, chemotherapy hats, lap robes, walker bags and slippers are also provided to church and community members in hospitals, nursing homes, hospice facilities and schools.
Who we are:
The SMM Prayer Shawl Ministry began in 2005 with a handful of members who shared a passion to create and a desire to help others. Since then, our ministry has grown to over 30 members consisting of SMM parishioners and community members.
We meet on the second Friday of the month from 9:30-11:00 am from August – December at SMM Catholic church. When you walk through our doors, you will find an informal atmosphere. We meet to bring items made and pray over them, share ideas and develop friendships. There are no quotas to meet, no special skills required, just a desire to help others. Members are always willing to teach anyone who wants to learn a new skill.
